Biography
Wu Ma (Chinese: 午馬), also credited as Ng Ma or Ma Wo, was a Hong Kong actor, director, producer and screenwriter. Born Fung Wang-yuen in Tianjin, China, on 22 September 1942, he moved to Hong Kong in 1960 and made his screen debut in 1963 after training at the Shaw Brothers acting school. He appeared in over 240 films and directed 49 during a career spanning five decades.
He is best known for his role as the Taoist ghosthunter Yin Chek-ha in A Chinese Ghost Story (1987), for which he won the Golden Horse Award for Best Supporting Actor. Other notable appearances include Boss Wong in Peking Opera Blues (1986), Grand Uncle Cheung in Once Upon a Time in China (1991), and roles in films such as Police Story 2 (1988) and Project A (1983). He frequently collaborated with director Tsui Hark and received multiple Hong Kong Film Award nominations for supporting performances and direction. Wu Ma died in Hong Kong on 4 February 2014.
