Biography
Zoe Ada Caldwell was an Australian actress. Born in Melbourne in 1933, she began her professional career in the 1950s with the Union Theatre Repertory Company and joined the Royal Shakespeare Company in England. She won four Tony Awards for her Broadway performances: Best Featured Actress in a Play for Slapstick Tragedy (1966) and Best Actress in a Play for The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie (1968), Medea (1982) and Master Class (1996). She was appointed OBE in 1970.
Her film appearances include the role of The Countess in Woody Allen's The Purple Rose of Cairo (1985), Mrs Hill in Birth (2004) and Oskar's grandmother in Extremely Loud & Incredibly Close (2011). She voiced the Grand Councilwoman in the Lilo & Stitch franchise (2002–2006). Caldwell was married to producer Robert Whitehead from 1968 until his death in 2002.
