Akira Ishida's clear, composed voice can make an antagonist threatening without shutting out vulnerability. We rate that restraint: in Infinity Castle, he gives Akaza weight even when the film becomes too insistent about asking for sympathy.

Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba Infinity Castle (2025) surrounds Akaza with busy animated combat, but Akira Ishida's voice remains easy to attend to. Haruo Sotozaki's film gives its demons considerable attention, and Ishida's Akaza and Mamoru Miyano's Doma have enough presence to withstand the imagery. We were moved by Akaza because Ishida allows humanity into the threat without simply softening it. That is a useful skill in a film so keen to make us reconsider its opponents.
The early clue is Kaworu Nagisa in Neon Genesis Evangelion (1995), a role that helped establish his association with enigmatic characters. Wider recognition followed with Athrun Zala in Mobile Suit Gundam SEED (2002) and Gaara in Naruto (2002). The long portrayal of Gaara calls for consistency across series and films, a less conspicuous strength than making an immediate impression. Katsura Kotarou in the comedy-action series Gintama (2006) is a useful reminder that the later prominence of villains tells only part of the story. We would be wary of expecting menace every time that clear voice arrives.
Ishida's particular advantage is the contrast between a composed delivery and the vulnerability or intensity beneath it. His voice often suits youthful figures, with a clarity that need not make their feelings easy to read. For Akaza, Ishida has described wanting viewers to have no doubt about the character's strength. That seems the right priority for a performance required to shift between menace and humanity: the opponent has to remain convincing.
The limitation in Infinity Castle is how often the storytelling returns to the same request for sympathy. Repeated flashbacks lengthen an already long film and make the encounters feel increasingly familiar. Ishida can make the personal material matter, but he cannot give each recurrence the freshness of the first. We would like to hear that composure put to uses beyond another troubled antagonist, without losing the emotional precision that makes Akaza effective. Give Infinity Castle an evening if the series is already yours, and allow for the interruptions.
Biography
Akira Ishida (石田 彰) is a Japanese voice actor born on 2 November 1967 in Nisshin, Aichi. He is affiliated with Gerbera Peerless Ltd.
He studied theatre at Nihon University and began his career with Mausu Promotion in 1988, later freelancing before joining his current agency. Ishida is known for voicing Gaara in the Naruto series (2002–), Akaza in Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba (2019–) and its films including Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba Infinity Castle (2025), Kaworu Nagisa in Neon Genesis Evangelion (1995) and its films, and roles in Sword Art Online and Solo Leveling.
In 2004 he was voted most popular voice actor in the Animage Anime Grand Prix, and in 2007 he won Best Supporting Actor at the first Seiyū Awards.
