Biography

Alexei Sayle is an English actor, stand-up comedian and writer. He was born Alexei David Sayle on 7 August 1952 in Anfield, Liverpool. He studied painting at Chelsea School of Art before becoming the first compère at the Comedy Store in London in 1979 and appearing in early alternative comedy shows.

Sayle played multiple members of the Balowski family and contributed additional material to the BBC series The Young Ones (1982–1984). He has appeared in films including Gorky Park (1983) and Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade (1989), and on television in Doctor Who (1985) and The Comic Strip Presents... (from 1982).

He has written and starred in his own sketch and stand-up series such as Alexei Sayle's Stuff (1988–1991). Sayle has also published short story collections and novels, and released the single "'Ullo John! Gotta New Motor?" in 1984. He has been married to Linda Rawsthorn since 1974.
