Biography
Anthony McCarten is a New Zealand writer, screenwriter, novelist and film producer. Born on 28 April 1961 in New Plymouth, he worked as a journalist before studying at Massey University and Victoria University of Wellington. He began his career as a playwright, co-writing the successful stage play Ladies Night (1987) with Stephen Sinclair.
McCarten is best known for his screenplays for biographical films, including The Theory of Everything (2014), for which he also served as producer, Darkest Hour (2017), Bohemian Rhapsody (2018), The Two Popes (2019) and Whitney Houston: I Wanna Dance with Somebody (2022). He received Academy Award nominations for Best Adapted Screenplay for The Theory of Everything and The Two Popes, and won two BAFTA awards for the former.
