Biography
Arthur Laurents (1917–2011) was an American playwright, screenwriter, theatre director and film producer. Born in New York City, he began writing radio scripts after college and served in the US Army during the Second World War, where he wrote training films.
Laurents achieved success on Broadway with the books for West Side Story (1957) and Gypsy (1959). His screenwriting credits include Rope (1948), Anastasia (1956), Bonjour Tristesse (1958) and The Way We Were (1973). He wrote and produced the 1977 film The Turning Point, for which he received Writers Guild of America and Academy Award nominations.
