Biography
Arthur P. Schmidt (21 August 1912 – 22 July 1965) was an American film editor and producer. He began his career with editing credits at RKO Pictures in the mid-1930s, including Anne of Green Gables (1934), before moving to Paramount Pictures, where he worked for twenty years.
In the 1950s he edited five films directed by Billy Wilder. With Doane Harrison he edited Sunset Boulevard (1950), which received an Academy Award nomination for Best Film Editing. He also edited Ace in the Hole (1951), Sabrina (1954), The Spirit of St. Louis (1957) and Some Like It Hot (1959). Schmidt received a further Oscar nomination for Sayonara (1957). Other credits include The Blue Dahlia (1946), When Worlds Collide (1951) and The Old Man and the Sea (1958).
In the 1960s Schmidt served as associate producer on seven Jerry Lewis comedies. He had more than sixty editing credits between 1934 and 1962. His son, Arthur Schmidt, also became a film editor.
