Biography
Arthur Treacher (also credited as Arthur Veary Treacher) was an English actor known for portraying butlers and other upper-class English characters in film and on stage. Born in Brighton, England, he served in the First World War and began his stage career afterwards. He moved to the United States in 1928 as part of the musical-comedy revue Great Temptations and appeared in numerous Broadway productions.
Treacher's film career began in the early 1930s. He played the valet Jeeves in Thank You, Jeeves! (1936) and Step Lively, Jeeves! (1937), and appeared in several Shirley Temple films, including Curly Top (1935) and Heidi (1937). Other credits include The Little Princess (1939), National Velvet (1945) and Mary Poppins (1964), in which he played Constable Jones.
From the mid-1960s he was a regular guest and sidekick on The Merv Griffin Show. He lent his name to the Arthur Treacher's Fish and Chips restaurant chain. He was married to Virginia Taylor from 1940 until his death in 1975.
