Biography
Barnard Hughes was an American actor who worked in theatre, film and television. He made his Broadway debut in 1939 and appeared in more than 400 stage roles, having trained with the Shakespeare Fellowship Repertory Company in New York.
His film credits included Towny in Midnight Cowboy (1969), Dr. Walter Gibbs in Tron (1982), Grandpa in The Lost Boys (1987), Aurelius Hogue in Doc Hollywood (1991) and Father Maurice in Sister Act 2: Back in the Habit (1993). He won the 1978 Tony Award for Best Actor in a Play for Da and reprised the role in the 1988 film adaptation. He was married to actress Helen Stenborg from 1950 until his death.
