Biography
Benjamin F. Glazer was a screenwriter, producer and director of American films. Born in Belfast, Ireland, into a Hungarian Jewish family, he moved to the United States and studied at the University of Pennsylvania Law School, passing the bar in 1906 before entering journalism and then the film industry.
Glazer worked extensively from the silent era into the 1950s. He wrote the scenario for 7th Heaven (1927), which won him an Academy Award for Best Writing (Adapted Screenplay) at the first Oscars ceremony. Other credits include Flesh and the Devil (1926), The Merry Widow (1925), Mata Hari (1931), A Farewell to Arms (1932) and Arise, My Love (1940), for which he received a second Oscar. He made the first English translation of Ferenc Molnár's play Liliom (1921), later the basis for the musical Carousel (1956).
Glazer was one of the founding members of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. He was married to actress Sharon Lynn from 1932 and died in Hollywood, California, in 1956.
