Biography

Brenda Cowling was an English actress. She was born Brenda Rose Cowling on 23 April 1925 in Islington, London, and died on 2 October 2010 at Denville Hall in Northwood, London.

She trained at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art from 1948 to 1950, where her classmates included Warren Mitchell and Jimmy Perry. Her film debut was an uncredited role in Stage Fright (1950). Cowling appeared in numerous films, including The Railway Children (1970), Jabberwocky (1977), Pink Floyd: The Wall (1982) and Octopussy (1983). On television she had roles in several sitcoms written or co-written by Perry and David Croft, such as Mrs Prentice in Dad's Army (1972) and the Sister in the Fawlty Towers episode 'The Germans' (1975). She played Mrs Lipton in You Rang, M'Lord? (1988–1993). She retired in 2006 after suffering a stroke.
