Busy Philipps finds hurt beneath the bluster of tough outsiders and outspoken comic companions. We rate her for making those people worth caring about, though the repeated supporting parts have sometimes given her too little to do.

Kim Kelly in Freaks and Geeks (1999) is a tough outsider, and Busy Philipps does not make her easy company. We felt for Kim because Philipps makes the hurt beneath her toughness recognisable. We rate her highly when she lets a character remain difficult and still gives us a reason to care. Paul Feig and Judd Apatow's series is funny and uncomfortable about school life, and its patience gives those qualities room. The pace occasionally drags, but this remains our strongest recommendation among her work.
Her television work moved from Audrey Liddell in Dawson's Creek (2001) to Laurie Keller in Cougar Town (2009), with six seasons alongside Courteney Cox. The tough outsider had become an outspoken comic supporting player, and her comic timing suited the change. The limitation is easy to see in the recurring best-friend casting, including I Feel Pretty (2018): somebody else gets to be the centre of the story. We value the sadness she finds beneath broad comedy, but it needs room to develop. We would like to see her given more to do before the script returns to somebody else's problems.
Mean Girls (2024) puts her in the familiar role of Mrs George, the mother trying to be cool. It also shows the limits of recognisable comic types: our reservations concern Tina Fey's recycled script and songs that do little to justify another version. Reneé Rapp's Regina George supplies the strongest reason to watch. Philipps fits an established casting pattern here, but this is not a film we would use to make the strongest case for her.
In Girls5eva (2021), she has a starring role as Summer Dutkowsky in a comedy produced by Tina Fey about middle-aged women pursuing their dreams. That is a more promising prospect than another best-friend assignment, though a larger part still needs to give her something beyond the jokes. Start with Freaks and Geeks for the tougher, less immediately accommodating Philipps.

Busy Philipps, born Elizabeth Jean Philipps on 25 June 1979 in Oak Park, Illinois, is an American actress. She began her career with a role as Kim Kelly in the television series Freaks and Geeks (1999–2000). She subsequently appeared as Audrey Liddell in Dawson's Creek (2001–2003) and as Laurie Keller in Cougar Town (2009–2015).
Philipps has taken supporting roles in films including White Chicks (2004), Made of Honor (2008), He's Just Not That Into You (2009), The Gift (2015) and I Feel Pretty (2018). She played Mrs. George in the 2024 film Mean Girls. She received the Critics' Choice Television Award for Best Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series for her work on Cougar Town.
