Biography
Celine Song (born Song Ha-Young; Korean: 송하영) is a Canadian director, playwright and screenwriter. Born in South Korea on 19 September 1988, she moved with her family to Markham, Ontario, at the age of 12. She received an MFA in playwriting from Columbia University in 2014.
Song’s plays include Endlings, which premiered in 2019 at the American Repertory Theater and had its New York run cut short by the COVID-19 pandemic, and The Seagull on The Sims 4 (2020). She worked as a staff writer on the first season of the Amazon series The Wheel of Time (2021).
Her feature directorial debut, Past Lives (2023), which she also wrote, received critical acclaim and was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Picture and Best Original Screenplay. Her second film, Materialists (2025), which she wrote and directed, was released in June 2025.
