Biography
César Charlone is a Uruguayan cinematographer and director based in Brazil. He began working in film in the early 1970s as an assistant cameraman after moving to São Paulo to study at the Escola Superior de Cinema São Luiz.
Charlone is best known for his cinematography on City of God (2002), directed by Fernando Meirelles and Kátia Lund, which earned him an Academy Award nomination. He has maintained a long collaboration with Meirelles, serving as director of photography on The Constant Gardener (2005), Blindness (2008) and The Two Popes (2019). His other credits include American Made (2017) and The Pope's Toilet (2007).
Charlone has also directed films, including the co-directed The Pope's Toilet (2007) and Artigas: La Redota (2011), as well as episodes of the series 3% (2016).
