Biography
Christopher Benjamin was an English actor. Born on 27 December 1934 in Trowbridge, Wiltshire, he trained at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art and served in the Royal Air Force during national service. His career spanned stage, television and radio from 1958 until 2016.
He performed regularly with the Royal Shakespeare Company and appeared as Falstaff in The Merry Wives of Windsor at Shakespeare's Globe in 2008. On television he played Sam Powell in Dempsey and Makepeace (1985), Henry Gordon Jago in the Doctor Who serial The Talons of Weng-Chiang (1977), which he later reprised in Big Finish audio dramas, and roles in The Prisoner, The Avengers, Pride and Prejudice (1995) and Midsomer Murders. He provided the voice of Rowf in the animated film The Plague Dogs (1982).
Benjamin died on 10 January 2025, aged 90. He was married to the actress and writer Anna Fox.
