Biography
Dorothy Hackett McGuire was an American actress. Born in Omaha, Nebraska, she began her career on the stage and made her Broadway debut in the title role of Claudia in 1941. She reprised the part for her film debut in 1943.
McGuire received an Academy Award nomination for Best Actress for her role as Kathy Lacy in Gentleman's Agreement (1947). She appeared in films including A Tree Grows in Brooklyn (1945), The Spiral Staircase (1946), Friendly Persuasion (1956), Old Yeller (1957) and Swiss Family Robinson (1960), and later worked in television series such as St. Elsewhere and Highway to Heaven. She was married to photographer John Swope from 1943 until his death in 1979; they had two children.
