Biography
Eduard Tisse (also credited as Eduard Tissé) was a Soviet cinematographer. Born in Liepāja in the Russian Empire (now Latvia), he began his career as a newsreel and military cameraman during the First World War and the Russian Civil War. In 1921 he became a professor at the Gerasimov Institute of Cinematography.
Tisse is best known for his long collaboration with director Sergei Eisenstein. He served as director of photography on Strike (1925), Battleship Potemkin (1925), October: Ten Days That Shook the World (1928), The General Line (1929), Alexander Nevsky (1938), Ivan the Terrible, Part I (1944) and Ivan the Terrible, Part II (1958). He received three Stalin Prizes (first degree) in 1946, 1949 and 1950.
