Biography
Frank Middlemass (28 May 1919 – 8 September 2006) was an English actor. Born in Eaglescliffe, County Durham, he served in the British Army during the Second World War, was wounded at Dunkirk and rose to the rank of lieutenant colonel before leaving the service at the age of thirty.
He began his acting career in repertory theatre and later appeared with the Old Vic and the Royal Shakespeare Company. On television he played Algy Herries in To Serve Them All My Days (1980–1981), Dr Alex Ferrenby in Heartbeat (1992–1993) and Rocky Hardcastle in As Time Goes By (1993–2005); he was also the fourth actor to portray Dan Archer in the BBC radio serial The Archers. His film roles include Sir Charles Lyndon in Barry Lyndon (1975), a plumber in Frankenstein Must Be Destroyed (1969) and Windsor in The Island (1980).
