Biography
Freda Dowie was an English actress. She was born on 22 July 1928 in Carlisle, Cumberland, and trained at the Royal Central School of Speech and Drama. Her career spanned from the late 1950s to 2009, with numerous television and film roles.
She is known for her performance as the Mother in the film Distant Voices, Still Lives (1988), for which she received a nomination for a European Film Award. Other credits include a nun in The Omen (1976), roles in I, Claudius (1976), Agatha Christie's Poirot (1989) and Midsomer Murders (1997), and Florrie Hutchinson in the series Our Friends in the North (1996). She also appeared in Jude (1996) and Fragile (2005).
Dowie was married three times; her third husband was the filmmaker David Thompson.
