G. W. Bailey is good at playing men who expect to be obeyed, particularly when a comedy needs someone to take the nonsense seriously. The gruffness can become familiar, but we value his steadiness in an ensemble.

In Police Academy (1984), Bailey’s Lieutenant Thaddeus Harris expects to be obeyed. Bailey plays him straight, which gives the broad comedy a useful adversary instead of another performer competing to be funny. We like the conviction: an authority figure who is already in on the joke would give everyone else much less to do. It is a narrow assignment, but one that depends on the actor taking it seriously.
Television had already given him a place in an ensemble, with his recurring Sergeant Luther Rizzo in M\A\S\H from 1979 to 1983. He plays Hugh Beale in St. Elsewhere* (1982), a hospital drama we recommend for its flawed staff and the actors who make them worth following. We warmed to those people because their shortcomings were allowed to matter, even when the writing grew insistent about what we should learn. The pace can drag, and some lessons are repeated after they have landed. There is enough pleasure in the company to make those faults bearable.
The reservation is how often Bailey has been asked to play another man in charge. He returned as Harris in the Police Academy sequels, and tough or comic authority figures became a recurring assignment. He has described the job without much fuss: “My approach to playing various roles doesn’t change a great deal. I make sure that the integrity of the character is protected and that I play the note I’m hired for.” It is a sensible approach, with the risk that we know too soon what to expect.
The later procedural work gave him a sustained place in another ensemble. He played Lieutenant Louie Provenza alongside Kyra Sedgwick in The Closer (2005–2012), continuing the role in Major Crimes (2012–2018). Those long-running supporting parts make good use of his reliability, without offering much escape from the familiar authority figure. For an introduction, we would choose St. Elsewhere if a hospital drama appeals; allow for the occasional lecture.
Biography
G. W. Bailey is an American actor born on 27 August 1944 in Port Arthur, Texas. He attended Lamar University and Texas Tech University without completing his initial studies, and worked with local theatre companies in the mid-1960s before moving to California in the 1970s.
Bailey began appearing in television series such as Starsky and Hutch (1975), Charlie's Angels (1976) and CHiPs (1977). His film debut came in A Force of One (1979). He played Sergeant Luther Rizzo in the television series MASH (1979–1983) and Dr. Hugh Beale in St. Elsewhere (1982–1983). He is also known for portraying Lieutenant (later Captain) Thaddeus Harris in the Police Academy* films (1984–1994).
Bailey returned to education in 1993 and graduated with a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Theatre from Southwest Texas State University in 1994; he served as artist-in-residence there for the 1999–2000 academic year. From 2005 to 2018 he played Detective Lieutenant Louie Provenza in The Closer and its spin-off Major Crimes.
