Biography
Gert Fröbe was a German actor. Born Karl Gerhart Fröbe on 25 February 1913 in Oberplanitz (now part of Zwickau), Saxony, he trained as a stage painter at the Dresden State Theater and later studied acting. He worked in theatre before and after the Second World War and made his film debut in Berliner Ballade (1948).
Fröbe appeared in more than 100 films, predominantly in German productions. He gained international recognition for his role as Auric Goldfinger in the James Bond film Goldfinger (1964). Other notable credits include The Longest Day (1962), Those Magnificent Men in Their Flying Machines (1965), Chitty Chitty Bang Bang (1968) and Ludwig (1973). His English-language performances were often dubbed owing to his accent. He died on 5 September 1988 in Munich.
