Biography
Gilbert Emery, born Gilbert Emery Bensley Pottle, was an American actor and playwright. He appeared in over 80 films between 1921 and his death, often in supporting roles as distinguished or aristocratic characters.
He began his career as a writer of short stories, poems and plays, using the name Emery Pottle or Gilbert Emery. Seven of his plays were produced on Broadway from 1921 to 1933. His film credits include A Farewell to Arms (1932) as the British Major, Peter Ibbetson (1935) as Wilkins, Dracula's Daughter (1936) as Sir Basil Humphrey, The Life of Emile Zola (1937) as the Minister of War, Waterloo Bridge (1940) and That Hamilton Woman (1941).
Emery was born on 11 June 1875 in Naples, New York, and died on 28 October 1945 in Los Angeles.
