Hayden Panettiere played girls who could take a hit, in a cheerleader's uniform or holding a shotgun, and made toughness look like something learned rather than handed out. Kirby Reed in the Scream films is the part that used her best.

A Hayden Panettiere character has usually just been hurt and is already getting back up. In Heroes (2006) she was Claire Bennet, the indestructible cheerleader, a girl who could not be killed and was frightened all the same, and she played the toughness and the fear as one thing rather than taking turns with them. It made her one of several reasons to stay with a programme whose first series promised more than the later ones delivered.
She had been working since infancy: commercials, then the daytime soaps One Life to Live and Guiding Light, a voice in A Bug's Life (1998), a child's part opposite Denzel Washington in Remember the Titans (2000). Heroes made her known everywhere at once. Then came the two parts that define the rest: Kirby Reed in Wes Craven's Scream 4 (2011), the horror fan who knows the rules, and Juliette Barnes in Nashville (2012–2018), an ambitious country singer, a role that had her singing as well as acting for six years. There was a gap of some years after that, and then Kirby again in Scream VI (2023), now an FBI agent.
Kirby is the part that fitted. The Scream films are full of people who have seen the films, but Panettiere gave that knowingness a body and a dry tongue, a girl who would rather be in on the joke than be the one it is played on. When she walked back into Scream VI we were gladder than we had expected to be, and the reason is plain: Neve Campbell is not in that film, and Kirby is one of the few people in it who has been here before and acts like it. The film around her is tired between its set pieces; she is not. She got the part back herself, by her own account. "I willed her back into existence and I called them."
The trouble was what she was offered in between. She was cast again and again as the resilient schoolgirl or cheerleader with something terrible happening to her, and she was good enough at it that the offers did not widen much after Heroes. Nashville is the exception in kind, and we have not reviewed it, so we will only say that six years of carrying the songs and the drama is not light work. The career is narrow, and she was good within it.
Start with the first series of Heroes, before it loses its footing, then go to Scream VI for Kirby with a shotgun. It is a rare thing for a franchise character to come back because the actor rang up and asked.
Biography
Hayden Panettiere was an American actress and singer. Born on 21 August 1989 in Palisades, New York, she began her career as a child, appearing in commercials from infancy and taking early television roles in the soap operas One Life to Live and Guiding Light.
She gained wider recognition for voicing Dot in the animated film A Bug's Life (1998) and playing Sheryl Yoast in Remember the Titans (2000). Panettiere became known internationally for her portrayal of Claire Bennet in the series Heroes (2006–2010) and Juliette Barnes in Nashville (2012–2018). She reprised her role as Kirby Reed from Scream 4 (2011) in Scream VI (2023). Panettiere died on 16 August 2026 in Greenville, South Carolina, aged 36.
