Biography
Hein Heckroth (14 April 1901 – 7 July 1970) was a German painter, stage designer and film production and costume designer. Born in Giessen, he trained in art and began designing sets and costumes for theatre and ballet in Germany, including work with the Kurt Jooss company.
He moved to Britain in the 1930s and entered film as a costume designer on Caesar and Cleopatra (1945). He worked on several Powell and Pressburger productions, serving as costume designer on A Matter of Life and Death (1946) and Black Narcissus (1947) before becoming their principal production designer on The Red Shoes (1948), for which he shared the Academy Award for Best Art Direction (Colour) with Arthur Lawson. He also designed The Small Back Room (1949), The Tales of Hoffmann (1951) and later films including Torn Curtain (1966).
