Jacek Koman makes authority and menace convincing in supporting parts, often speaking with a Polish accent, but his singing and physical assurance suggest more possibilities.

In Moulin Rouge (2001), Jacek Koman's singing of “El Tango de Roxanne” gives us a reason to wish the cutting would slow down. As the Unconscious Argentinean, he has both the vocal and physical assurance Baz Luhrmann's musical needs. His performance is forceful enough for the surrounding commotion, and interesting enough to deserve a longer look. We were frustrated by the rapid editing, because his singing and movement give us something specific to concentrate on. Luhrmann has supplied the talent; we would prefer a little less interruption.
That does not make Koman the centre of the film. Nicole Kidman and Ewan McGregor make its romance matter, and our affection for it rests chiefly with them. Koman's contribution is more particular: the tango makes use of skills that a stern expression cannot convey. He is frequently cast as an authoritative or menacing figure in Australian and international productions, often using his Polish accent. It is understandable casting, but we would not want it to become the whole job.
The theatre work helps explain why we would ask for more. His repertoire includes Shakespeare and Beckett, and he played Willy Loman in Death of a Salesman (2021), giving directors reasons to consider him beyond the familiar supporting roles. After Moulin Rouge brought wider recognition, his screen credits included Tomasz in Children of Men (2006) and Konstanty ‘Koscik’ Kozłowski in Defiance (2008). Polish productions became a fuller part of his work from around 2015, with Robert Krasucki in The Hater (2020) among them.
In Edward Berger's Conclave (2024), he plays Wozniak, while Ralph Fiennes supplies the careful central performance as the cardinal running the election. We found it handsome, quick and well acted, though less persuasive when it asks to be treated as a meditation. Our recommendation rests on the ensemble and the pace, rather than on any claim that it gives Koman a defining part. Giving him more to do need not mean putting him at the centre. Start with the musical for his singing and the tango, provided the rapid cutting does not wear us out.
Biography
Jacek Koman is a Polish actor and singer. Born on 15 August 1956 in Bielsko-Biała, Poland, he trained at the National Film School in Łódź and made his professional stage debut in 1978. He emigrated to Australia in 1982 and has worked extensively in film, television and theatre there and in Europe.
Koman is known for roles including the Unconscious Argentinean in Moulin Rouge! (2001), Tomasz in Children of Men (2006), Ivan in Australia (2008) and Wozniak in Conclave (2024). He is the lead singer of the Melbourne band VulgarGrad. He is married to Australian actress Catherine McClements.
