Biography
James Baldwin was an American writer, essayist and playwright. Born in Harlem, New York, he became known for works examining racial, sexual and class distinctions in mid-20th-century America.
He wrote an early screenplay for a film about Malcolm X that formed the basis for Spike Lee's 1992 feature Malcolm X. Baldwin appears in archive footage in later documentaries including I Am Not Your Negro (2017) and Public Speaking (2011). He died in Saint-Paul-de-Vence, France.
