Biography
Jerzy Andrzejewski (19 August 1909 – 19 April 1983) was a Polish novelist and screenwriter. He studied Polish language and literature at the University of Warsaw and published his first short stories in the 1930s. His 1948 novel Ashes and Diamonds examined the moral and political tensions in Poland immediately after the Second World War.
Andrzejewski wrote the screenplay for Andrzej Wajda’s 1958 film adaptation of Ashes and Diamonds, in which he is credited alongside the director. He also wrote the screenplay for the 1960 film Innocent Sorcerers. After joining the Polish United Workers’ Party in 1950, he left following the events of 1956 and later became a founding member of the Workers’ Defence Committee (KOR) and a supporter of the Solidarity movement.
