Biography
Andrzej Wajda was a Polish film and theatre director and screenwriter. Born on 6 March 1926 in Suwałki, Poland, he studied painting at the Academy of Fine Arts in Kraków and film directing at the Łódź Film School, graduating in 1953. His debut feature was A Generation (1955).
Wajda was a leading figure in the Polish Film School. He is known for the war trilogy comprising A Generation (1955), Kanał (1957) and Ashes and Diamonds (1958), as well as later films including The Promised Land (1975), Man of Marble (1977), Man of Iron (1981), Danton (1983), Katyn (2007) and Afterimage (2016). Four of his films were nominated for the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film. He received an honorary Oscar in 2000 and died on 9 October 2016.
