Biography
Jerzy Skolimowski is a Polish film director, screenwriter and actor. Born in Łódź in 1938, he began as a screenwriter on Andrzej Wajda’s Innocent Sorcerers (1960) and made his directorial debut with The Menacing Eye (1960). His early credits include the screenplay for Knife in the Water (1962) and direction of The Departure (1967), which won the Golden Bear at the Berlin International Film Festival.
Skolimowski directed Deep End (1971), The Shout (1978), Moonlighting (1982) and Essential Killing (2010). After living in Los Angeles for over twenty years, during which he painted and occasionally acted, he returned to Poland and filmmaking with Four Nights with Anna (2008). Later works include 11 Minutes (2015), The Palace (2023) and EO (2022), which received the Jury Prize at Cannes and an Academy Award nomination for Best International Feature Film.
He has also acted in films including Eastern Promises (2007) as Stepan. In 2016 he received the Golden Lion for Lifetime Achievement at the Venice Film Festival.
