Biography

Joe Alves is an American production designer and art director. Born on 21 May 1936 in San Leandro, California, he began his career in the 1950s and worked on numerous films and television productions.

He is known for his production design on Jaws (1975), Close Encounters of the Third Kind (1977), Jaws 2 (1978), Escape from New York (1981) and Jaws 3-D (1983), which he also directed. Alves designed three features for Steven Spielberg, starting with The Sugarland Express (1974). He was nominated for an Academy Award and won a BAFTA for Best Art Direction for Close Encounters of the Third Kind.
