Biography
John Barry (3 July 1935 – 1 June 1979) was a British production designer. He trained as an architect and had experience in stage design before entering the film industry as a draughtsman on Cleopatra (1963). He assisted on the television series Danger Man and served as art director on Decline and Fall... of a Birdwatcher (1968).
Barry became production designer on Kelly's Heroes (1970, credited as Jonathan Barry) and A Clockwork Orange (1971). He worked on Phase IV (1974), The Little Prince (1974) and Lucky Lady (1975). George Lucas hired him for Star Wars (1977), for which he won the Academy Award for Best Art Direction. He also contributed to Superman (1978) and Superman II (1980), and served as second unit director on The Empire Strikes Back (1980). Barry died of meningitis in London while working on the latter film.
