John Gallagher Jr. gives supportive characters enough vulnerability to make their kindness interesting. We value his warmth and restraint, especially in Short Term 12, where he helps an ensemble keep its humour without diminishing the hurt.

In Short Term 12 (2013), John Gallagher Jr.’s Mason has enough presence to keep Brie Larson’s Grace from dominating every encounter. He belongs to an ensemble that gives her people to respond to besides people in pain. We laughed at Destin Daniel Cretton’s banter because the humour belongs to the staff and the young people in the home, without making their suffering the joke. Gallagher’s warmth fits a film in which doing difficult work need not mean being solemn all day.
Earlier supporting parts included Pieces of April (2003) and Whatever Works (2009), before The Newsroom (2012–2014) brought him wider notice. Aaron Sorkin’s series gave him Jim Harper, an affable character whose inner conflict Gallagher could suggest beneath the agreeable manner. There is a danger of underestimating acting this unshowy, especially when the character’s job is often to provide emotional stability. Gallagher makes that stability seem like something a vulnerable person can offer, which gives the familiar nice-man part some interest.
Short Term 12 remains the clearest reason for our enthusiasm, although its writing sometimes arranges suffering too neatly. Alongside Kaitlyn Dever and LaKeith Stanfield, Gallagher helps keep the other characters from existing only for Grace’s benefit. Cretton’s ensemble gives Larson something substantial to work with, and Mason’s supportive place in it is worth taking seriously. The risk with this kind of casting is that the actor gets thanked for being likeable and asked to do little else. What we respond to in Gallagher is the vulnerability that keeps the likeability from becoming bland.
The genre roles offer a change of direction: Emmett in 10 Cloverfield Lane (2016) and the antagonist in Mike Flanagan’s Hush (2016). The latter puts the familiar expectation of a helpful man aside. Those parts are a reason to be curious about what else he might be asked to do, though our firmest recommendation rests elsewhere. Start with Short Term 12, despite the script’s occasional tidiness.

John Gallagher Jr. is an American actor. He was born on 17 June 1984 in Wilmington, Delaware.
He originated the role of Moritz Stiefel in the Broadway musical Spring Awakening (2006), for which he received the Tony Award for Best Featured Actor in a Musical. His film credits include Mason in Short Term 12 (2013), Emmett in 10 Cloverfield Lane (2016), and roles in Whatever Works (2009) and Underwater (2020). On television he has appeared as Jim Harper in The Newsroom (2012–2014) and in Westworld (2016).
