Biography
John Houseman was a Romanian-born British-American actor and producer. Born Jacques Haussmann on 22 September 1902 in Bucharest, Romania, he anglicised his name and worked extensively in theatre, radio and film.
He collaborated with Orson Welles on the Federal Theatre Project and the Mercury Theatre, including early work on Citizen Kane. He produced numerous films in the 1940s and 1950s, and later headed the drama division at the Juilliard School.
Houseman won the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor for his role as Professor Charles Kingsfield in The Paper Chase (1973), which he reprised in the television series. His film credits include Seven Days in May (1964), Three Days of the Condor (1975) as Mr. Wabash, Rollerball (1975) and The Fog (1980). He died on 31 October 1988 in Malibu, California.
