Biography
John McIntire was an American character actor who appeared in 65 theatrical films and many television series. Born in Spokane, Washington, he began his career in radio and theatre before making his screen debut in 1947.
McIntire replaced Ward Bond as wagonmaster Christopher Hale in the NBC series Wagon Train from 1961 to 1965. He later replaced Charles Bickford as ranch owner Clay Grainger in The Virginian for four seasons from 1967. He played Sheriff Al Chambers in Alfred Hitchcock's Psycho (1960) and provided voices for animated films including The Rescuers (1977) and The Fox and the Hound (1981).
McIntire was married to actress Jeanette Nolan from 1935 until his death from emphysema and lung cancer in Pasadena, California, on 30 January 1991.
