Biography

Joseph M. Newman was an American film director. He began his career as an assistant director at MGM, receiving Academy Award nominations in the now-defunct Assistant Director category for David Copperfield (1935) and San Francisco (1936).

Newman directed the science fiction film This Island Earth (1955). He later directed episodes of television series including four instalments of The Twilight Zone (1959) and ten of The Alfred Hitchcock Hour (1962). He also directed 711 Ocean Drive (1950) and several westerns and other features.

Newman served as a major in the US Signal Corps during the Second World War. His credits span from the 1930s to 1965.
