Biography
Karen Schmeer was a film editor who collaborated extensively with director Errol Morris. Born on 20 February 1970 in Portland, Oregon, she graduated from Boston University with a degree in anthropology in 1992 and began working with Morris as a researcher before editing his 1997 documentary Fast, Cheap & Out of Control.
She edited several of Morris's films, including Mr. Death: The Rise and Fall of Fred A. Leuchter, Jr. (1999) and the Academy Award-winning The Fog of War (2003). Other credits include My Father, the Genius (2002), Sergio (2009), for which she won the Best Editing award at the 2009 Sundance Film Festival, and Bobby Fischer Against the World (2011).
Schmeer died on 29 January 2010 in Manhattan, New York, after being struck by a car in a hit-and-run incident.
