Biography
Karl Markovics is an Austrian actor and film director, born on 29 August 1963 in Vienna. He began his career in the theatre in the early 1980s at Vienna's Serapionstheater and has continued to perform regularly on stage at venues including the Volkstheater.
Markovics is known for his leading role as Salomon Sorowitsch in The Counterfeiters (2007), which won the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film, and for playing Ernst Stockinger in the television series Inspector Rex (1994–1996) and its spin-off Stockinger. His other notable screen credits include The Grand Budapest Hotel (2014), A Hidden Life (2019) as the Mayor of St. Radegund, Resistance (2020) and Babylon Berlin (from 2017). He has also directed films including Breathing (2011) and Superwelt (2015).
