Kate O'Flynn makes blunt, awkward women funny without tidying away what makes them difficult. Her precise, deadpan acting suits comedy that can turn uncomfortable, and Widow's Bay gives us good reason to seek her out.

Patricia Moyer in Widow's Bay (2026) can be annoying, and Kate O'Flynn does not hurry to excuse her. The toughness and selfishness remain visible alongside her bravery and kindness. We cared about Patricia because O'Flynn allowed her to be difficult without making that her only quality. Her deadpan delivery is well suited to the series' mixture of comedy and horror, but the warmth matters just as much. This is a strong place to start with an actor whose awkward characters are worth spending time with.
Her screen work began with Suzy in Mike Leigh's Happy-Go-Lucky (2008), followed by years of supporting film and television parts. The substantial early opportunity came on stage, as Racheal Keats in Port (2013). Television gradually gave her more room, through recurring work as DC Emma Lancing in Landscapers (2021) and a co-leading role as Fiona Lewis in Everyone Else Burns (2023). By Widow's Bay, a leading part could make fuller use of the bluntness and vulnerability that had become her particular strengths.
Leigh remains a useful connection: they have made four films together, and O'Flynn puts the writer's voice at the centre of the job. That attention to the script helps explain the precision of her comedy and her care for the ensemble. She can play an eccentric woman without making every exchange an invitation to admire the eccentricity. The danger with such casting is that bluntness becomes the whole character; Patricia's capacity to be both selfish and kind gives her more to do.
There is a caveat to our recommendation of Widow's Bay: its supernatural rules sometimes demand more attention than they deserve. O'Flynn and Matthew Rhys are the stronger reason to stay with it, and the ensemble keeps the people worth caring about when the mystery gets fussy. We would welcome more leading parts that let her remain difficult, rather than making her characters easier to like. Start with Widow's Bay, with a little patience for the mythology.
Biography
Kate O'Flynn is a British actress of stage and screen. She trained at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art after attending the Royal Exchange youth theatre in Manchester as a teenager. Her first professional screen role was in Mike Leigh's 2008 film Happy-Go-Lucky.
On stage, O'Flynn appeared in the National Theatre production of Port (2013), for which she received the Critics' Circle Theatre Award for Most Promising Newcomer. She later played Jo in A Taste of Honey (2014) at the National Theatre and Laura Wingfield in a 2017 West End revival of The Glass Menagerie, earning a Laurence Olivier Award nomination for Best Actress in a Supporting Role.
Her screen credits include recurring roles in Landscapers (2021), Everyone Else Burns (2023–2024) and My Lady Jane (2024), as well as appearances in Death in Paradise (2011) and No Offence (2015). She stars as Patricia Moyer in the Apple TV+ series Widow's Bay (2026–present).
