We value Ken Lamkin most for sitcom photography that gives actors room to be funny. Frasier shows the benefit: faces stay readable, small movements matter, and the pictures rarely ask to be admired.

Watch the person listening in Frasier (1993): a pause can be as funny as the line that precedes it. The photography credited to Jerry Workman and Ken Lamkin keeps faces readable while preserving the posture and small movements that make David Hyde Pierce funny. We laughed at those reactions because the slight adjustments in his body carry jokes that dialogue alone could not supply. We rate this work for how carefully it directs our attention towards the actors, without making a fuss about doing so.
Directing was an occasional part of a career built mainly around television photography. Lamkin began as a camera operator and technical director in the 1960s, moving into director of photography work in the 1970s. His sitcom credits include Wings (1990) and Friends (1994), while Shadow Force (1992) gave him both directing and cinematography duties. On Frasier, he served as director of photography across all 262 episodes, from 1993 to 2004, and directed one episode in 1998.
The comedy also depends on people whose work should not be folded into Lamkin's credit. Editors Ron Volk and Janet Ashikaga, among others, give reactions time to register before the next line arrives. Workman and Lamkin's clear photography makes that waiting worth watching: the listener remains an active part of the exchange. The result serves Kelsey Grammer and Pierce particularly well, because a joke need not end when the speaker stops, and the person receiving it may be providing half the pleasure.
Some of Frasier's misunderstandings run past the last good joke, and clear pictures cannot shorten them. That is a caveat about the comedy rather than a reason to dismiss photography which usually knows where our attention belongs. For Lamkin's contribution, start there: watch Pierce listening, and notice how little effort it takes to see the joke.
Biography
Ken Lamkin was an American cinematographer. He served as director of photography on the NBC sitcom Frasier (1993–2004) for all 262 episodes and directed one episode in 1998.
His other television credits include work as director of photography on Friends (1994) and several other sitcoms. He received three consecutive Primetime Emmy Award nominations for Outstanding Cinematography for a Multi-Camera Series for his work on Frasier.
