Biography
Lionel Pape, also credited as Edward Lionel Pape, was an English-born stage and screen actor. He was born on 17 April 1877 in Brighton, Sussex, England, and died on 21 October 1944 in Woodland Hills, California.
Pape began his career in British stock companies before moving to the United States. He appeared in more than twenty Broadway productions between 1912 and 1935. His screen work began in the silent era with films such as The Pursuing Shadow (1915) and continued in Hollywood with supporting roles in over fifty sound films during the 1930s and early 1940s.
He is known for his performances in The Philadelphia Story (1940) as Edward, How Green Was My Valley (1941) as Evans, and The Hound of the Baskervilles (1939) as the Coroner. He worked with directors including John Ford, Ernst Lubitsch and George Cukor.
