Lucy Punch makes a snob’s need for approval as funny as her certainty that she deserves it. We value the sympathy she earns without excusing the behaviour, though the casting has often been too predictable.

Amanda is trying to remain impressive, and Lucy Punch makes the effort look exhausting. In Amandaland (2025), Amanda is parenting teenagers after a move to South Harlesden and attempting to establish herself as an influencer. We rate Punch’s performance because the snobbery remains sharp even when Amanda’s circumstances make it difficult to maintain. She can be hurtful without becoming unbearable to watch, which is a substantial qualification for having a sitcom built around her.
The danger in Punch’s earlier work was being hired simply to supply another disagreeable woman. Ella Enchanted (2004) cast her as the stepsister Hattie alongside Joanna Lumley, while Into the Woods (2014) gave her another stepsister, Lucinda. Between them came Amy Squirrel opposite Cameron Diaz in Bad Teacher (2011), part of a move into American ensemble comedy after British television had repeatedly cast her as a posh idiot. Those parts established a recognisable comic presence, but also a rather narrow set of expectations. Motherland (2016–2022) gave her Amanda and the time to make that familiar snob more than a succession of unpleasant remarks.
We felt unexpectedly sorry for Amanda as her attempts at content creation exposed how badly she wanted approval. Punch makes those failures funnier by showing how much Amanda has invested in them. There is no need for a sudden improvement in her manners, or for us to forget how she treats people. The sympathy comes from seeing her try so hard at something she needs other people to admire.
Amandaland does have a weakness that its leading actor cannot fix: the wider ensemble does not readily feel like a group of people who regularly spend time together. Joanna Lumley supplies the cruellest laughs, and she and Punch are firmer reasons to return than the group as a whole. A high gag rate helps, but the effort of assembling that company still shows. Biography
Lucy Punch is an English actress. Born on 30 December 1977 in Hammersmith, London, she performed with the National Youth Theatre and began a course at University College London before dropping out to pursue acting. Her early television work included roles in Let Them Eat Cake (1999) and Doc Martin.
Punch is known for film roles including Hattie in Ella Enchanted (2004), Eve Draper in Hot Fuzz (2007), Amy Squirrel in Bad Teacher (2011) and Lucinda in Into the Woods (2014). On television she has appeared as Esmé Squalor in A Series of Unfortunate Events (2017–2019) and as Amanda Hughes in the BBC sitcom Motherland (2016–2022) and its spin-off Amandaland (2025–present).
She received a nomination for the British Academy Television Award for Best Female Comedy Performance for her work in Amandaland.
