Macaulay Culkin makes a child's self-importance funny without asking us to find every selfish impulse adorable. In Home Alone, his confidence carries the comedy; the uncertainty underneath earns our affection more reliably than the film's sentiment.

In Home Alone (1990), Kevin is delighted to be in charge of himself, and takes the responsibility seriously. Culkin lets him be pleased, selfish and less secure than he would care to admit, without pausing to make a case for his good nature. We laughed at how important he thinks he is, because Culkin treats the child's new independence as a job worth doing properly. The performance is confident enough to let the boy be irritating. It also keeps his need for other people in view, even while he enjoys their absence.
Uncle Buck (1989) led John Hughes to cast him in Home Alone, and the subsequent leading roles did not all ask for another Kevin. My Girl (1991) gave him more dramatic material; The Good Son (1993) cast him as a troubled child opposite Elijah Wood. After Richie Rich (1994), he stepped back from major acting work. The return was sporadic, with Party Monster (2003) and later television work including American Horror Story (2021). We would still begin with Kevin, whose selfishness and uncertainty give us something to watch between the jokes.
Chris Columbus supports that performance by taking Kevin's wish for independence seriously, while Hughes's screenplay allows him to be selfish. John Muto's production design makes the house somewhere a child would want to have to himself. Julio Macat's warm cinematography helps us understand the pleasure of being there, and John Williams's score gives the separation weight without requiring Culkin to explain each change of mood. Culkin does not have to make Kevin solemn to persuade us that being alone might hurt. Catherine O'Hara makes the separation feel real, giving the film an adult worry that Culkin need not supply himself.
The film's weakness is its insistence on reminding us how much family matters when its actors have already made that clear. Its shifts from slapstick to sweetness can be clumsy, and Culkin's confidence cannot smooth every one of them. We prefer the moments when Kevin is allowed to enjoy his freedom without an immediate lesson attached. For an introduction, choose Home Alone and allow for the occasional lecture about family.

Macaulay Culkin is an American actor. He was born Macaulay Carson Culkin on 26 August 1980 in New York City.
Culkin rose to prominence playing Kevin McCallister in the comedy Home Alone (1990), directed by Chris Columbus and written by John Hughes. He reprised the role in Home Alone 2: Lost in New York (1992). Other early film credits include Uncle Buck (1989), My Girl (1991) and Richie Rich (1994).
After a period away from acting in the late 1990s, Culkin returned with roles in Party Monster (2003) and Saved! (2004). He has appeared in later projects including the series American Horror Story and received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 2023. He was previously married to actress Rachel Miner.
