Biography
Mary Clare, born Mary Clare Absalom, was a British actress of stage, film and television. She made her London stage debut in 1910 and her West End debut in 1913 in Turandot at the St James's Theatre. She appeared in numerous West End productions and became one of Noël Coward's leading ladies, notably in Cavalcade (1931).
In films she was primarily a character actress. Her credits include Young and Innocent (1937) as Erica's Aunt Margaret, The Lady Vanishes (1938) as Baroness Isabel Nisatona, Oliver Twist (1948) as Mrs Corney and Moulin Rouge (1952) as Madame Loubet. She also appeared in several silent films, beginning with The Black Spider (1920).
Clare continued acting into the late 1950s, dividing her time between stage and screen. She died in 1970.
