Biography
Maude Eburne, also credited as Maud Eburne Riggs, was a Canadian character actress of stage and screen. Born Maud Eburne Riggs on 10 November 1875 in Bronte-on-the-Lake, Ontario, she began her career in stock theatre in Ontario and New York. She made her Broadway debut in 1914 as Coddles in the farce A Pair of Sixes and continued in humorous domestic roles in productions including The Half Moon (1920), Lady Butterfly (1923), Three Cheers (1928) and Many a Slip (1930).
Eburne moved to films with her first significant role in the sound remake The Bat Whispers (1930). She appeared in more than 100 films, often in supporting parts, until her retirement in 1951. Among her credits are Anna in To Be or Not to Be (1942), 'Ma' Pettingill in Ruggles of Red Gap (1935), Aunt Gussie Schnappmann in The Vampire Bat (1933) and Mrs Packer in The Suspect (1945). She died on 15 October 1960 in Hollywood, California.
