Biography
Maurice Carter (24 April 1913 – April 2000) was a British production designer and art director. Born in London, he worked extensively in British cinema from the 1940s onwards, contributing to films across genres including period dramas, war epics and fantasy adventures.
He served as production designer on Anne of the Thousand Days (1969) and The First Great Train Robbery (1978), and as art director or supervising art director on Becket (1964), Battle of Britain (1969) and 10 Rillington Place (1971). Carter was one of the first in England to use back projection and founded the Guild of Film Art Directors (later the British Film Designers Guild). He received two Academy Award nominations and three BAFTA nominations for his work.
