Biography
Maurizio Lombardi is an Italian actor, playwright and stage director. He was born on 17 November 1973 in Florence. He began his career in the stage company of Ugo Chiti, remaining there for ten years, and later co-founded the Piccoli Briganti company, which specialised in adaptations of fables and children's stories.
Lombardi made his playwriting debut with Stile Libero and won the Florence Fringe Festival in 2013 with Fists of Sulfur, which was later performed at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe. His stage work includes a notable role in The Pride, directed by Luca Zingaretti, for which he received a Le Maschere Award nomination.
On screen he is known for playing Cardinal Mario Assente in Paolo Sorrentino's series The Young Pope (2016) and The New Pope (2020). He appeared as Emilio De Bono in the 2025 series Mussolini: Son of the Century and as Inspector Pietro Ravini in Ripley (2024). In 2024 he won a Nastro d'Argento for best actor in a comedy for Romeo Is Juliet.
