Biography
Max Phipps, also credited as Maxwell John Phipps, was an Australian actor. Born in Dubbo, New South Wales, on 18 November 1939, he trained at the Ensemble Theatre in Sydney from the age of 21 and appeared in numerous stage productions, including in London and as Dr Frank-N-Furter in The Rocky Horror Show in Melbourne.
His screen career spanned films and television from the 1960s to the 1990s. He is known for playing The Toadie in Mad Max 2 (1981), Prime Minister Gough Whitlam in the miniseries The Dismissal (1983), and other roles in The Cars That Ate Paris (1974), Thirst (1979), Stir (1980) — for which he received an AFI nomination — Nate and Hayes (1983) and Dark Age (1987). He also appeared in Farscape (1999) and Inspector Morse (1987). Phipps died in Sydney on 6 August 2000.
