Biography
Sir Michael Balcon (19 May 1896 – 17 October 1977) was an English film producer. He began his career in the early 1920s and co-founded Gainsborough Pictures. He later served as director of production at Gaumont-British and as producer for MGM-British before becoming head of production at Ealing Studios in 1938.
Balcon remained at Ealing until 1959. He produced or oversaw numerous films there, including Kind Hearts and Coronets (1949), The Lavender Hill Mob (1951) and The Ladykillers (1955). Earlier credits include The Lodger: A Story of the London Fog (1927), The 39 Steps (1935) and The Man Who Knew Too Much (1934). He was knighted in 1948.
