Biography

Michael Bilton (14 December 1919 – 5 November 1993) was an English actor. Born in Cottingham, East Riding of Yorkshire, he attended Hymers College in Hull. He served in the British Army during the Second World War and was wounded at the Battle of El Alamein. After recovering, he began his career in repertory theatre.

Bilton appeared in numerous British television series and films. He played Hayter in the 1981 adaptation of Brideshead Revisited. His other credits include Frenzy (1972), The Fourth Protocol (1987) as Kim Philby, Doctor Who, The Prisoner, The Avengers, The Saint, Sherlock Holmes (1984) and Keeping Up Appearances (1990). He was best known for his sitcom roles as Ned in To the Manor Born (1979–1981) and Basil in Waiting for God (1990–1993).
