Michael Mando is most effective when a dangerous man has little to say and something to lose. His restrained work as Nacho Varga makes us want more roles that give him time to think.

In Better Call Saul (2015), Michael Mando makes us pay attention to a man who often has little to say. His Nacho Varga is a criminal whose moral doubts matter, and Mando lets the quiet scenes carry much of that struggle. We found those silences unexpectedly moving, because Mando shows us how troubled Nacho is without a speech asking for our sympathy. There is danger in the performance, but also the sense that being dangerous has not made this man's life easier.
The path to Nacho included voice and motion-capture work as Vaas Montenegro in Far Cry 3 (2012). A recurring role as Victor 'Vic' Schmidt in Orphan Black (2013) helped establish him on television before Better Call Saul gave him six seasons as a main character. Criminals and antagonists have supplied much of the work. The casting makes sense, but it risks treating intensity as the only thing he has to offer.
Better Call Saul gives that intensity time to develop into something more specific. Vince Gilligan and Peter Gould's programme is slow to get going, a caveat worth taking seriously, but its attention to performance repays the wait. Bob Odenkirk's Jimmy McGill is funny and aggravating; Mando's quieter work as Nacho gives us another reason to stay. He makes us care about Nacho without pretending that the man's occupation is a misunderstanding.
His return as Mac Gargan in Spider-Man: Brand New Day (2026), after Spider-Man: Homecoming (2017), is a less rewarding use of him. The larger digital set pieces give little space to the patient attention that serves him well on television. Gina Sansom, Harry Yoon and Nat Sanders share the editing credit, and scenes are cut away from before they can settle. The film is worth an evening for Spider-Man followers, but it is not where we would send anyone curious about Mando. Start with Better Call Saul, and allow for the slow opening.

Michael Mando, also credited as Mikel Mroué, is a Canadian actor born on 13 July 1981 in Quebec City, Quebec. He trained at the Dome Theatre Program at Dawson College in Montreal, graduating in 2007.
Mando is known for his role as Nacho Varga in the AMC series Better Call Saul (2015–2022), Mac Gargan/Scorpion in the Marvel films Spider-Man: Homecoming (2017) and Spider-Man: Brand New Day (2026), and Vic Schmidt in Orphan Black (2013–2014). He has also voiced Vaas Montenegro in the Far Cry video game series. He is a two-time Canadian Screen Award nominee and Screen Actors Guild Award nominee.
